In depth

What you should know

First things first: do the numbers work?

An online store works when you have products people will buy without seeing them in person, and you can get those products to them at a reasonable cost. Before applying for this solution, do the maths: what it costs you to pack and ship an order, what margin is left, and who will handle orders every day. From Mallorca, shipping to the mainland and the other islands changes the sums a lot. And factor in returns, which also cost time and money.

If what you sell is services or work quoted per job, the website solution is probably enough.

The catalogue: start with what already sells

The solution includes setting up and managing your catalogue of products and categories. Don't try to upload everything at once: start with what already sells well in your shop or over the phone, with good photos, your own descriptions, clear variants (sizes, colours, formats) and fixed prices. A short, well-built catalogue sells more than a huge one full of half-finished listings.

Organise categories the way your customers think, not the way your stockroom is laid out. In our guide to starting an online store in Mallorca we go through these decisions in more detail.

Payments and shipping: you set the rules

Payment gateways and shipping methods get configured, but the rules are business decisions: which payment methods you accept, where you ship to, whether you charge for delivery or make it free above a certain amount, whether customers can collect in store, and how you handle exchanges and returns. Put it in writing before you start, because your terms of sale, which customers will read in the store, come from the same decisions.

Think about your business rhythm too. If your shop is flat out in summer, decide who will pack online orders during those weeks, or whether you'd rather extend delivery times over the season. And if your products are fragile or perishable, packaging and the type of delivery are part of the price, not a detail to sort out later.

How we get it up and running

We design the store mobile-first and pay particular attention to the product page and checkout, which is where a sale is won or lost. Level AA accessibility (WCAG 2.1) applies to the basket and checkout form too, and we set up basic SEO for your products so they start getting indexed.

At handover we train you to add products, change prices and review orders yourself. It's the same approach as our online store service.

The day after launch

Publishing the store is only the beginning. From then on there's stock to update, orders to pack, customers with questions and listings to improve based on what you see working. Look at what visitors who leave without buying were viewing: it often points to photos, prices or shipping costs worth reviewing. Set aside time for that routine from the very first week. And if you're still weighing up the grant, the main Kit Digital page sets out the requirements and the other solutions.

Answered

Frequently asked

Do I need product photos before we start?

The sooner you have them the better, because the photo is the first thing that decides an online purchase. You don't need a professional studio for everything: good light, a neutral background and several views of each product go a long way. What you should avoid is launching with supplier photos identical to those in plenty of other stores.

Which payment methods can I offer?

The solution includes integrated payment gateways. Which ones to switch on depends on your customers: in the stores we build we usually work with card, Bizum, PayPal or bank transfer. We decide with you at the start, taking into account each gateway's fees and whether you mainly sell to customers on the island, on the mainland or abroad.

How is shipping set up if my business is in Mallorca?

We define zones and rates with you: the island, the rest of the Balearics, mainland Spain and, if you sell further afield, other countries. You can price by weight or per order, offer free delivery above a certain amount or in-store collection. What matters is that customers see the real shipping cost before paying, with no surprises at the end.

Will I be able to run the store without help?

Yes. The store is self-manageable: you add products, change prices, keep stock up to date and review orders from the dashboard. We train you at handover using your own products as examples. If you would rather someone else looked after technical updates, backups and security, that is a separate maintenance service.

Is my own store better than selling on a marketplace?

They are not mutually exclusive. In your own store you control the brand, prices and customer relationship; on a marketplace you gain a shop window with lots of traffic in exchange for accepting its rules and fees. If you have your own branded products, the store is usually the foundation, and a marketplace can be added later as an extra channel.
