Why an unmaintained WordPress site is losing you rankings on Google

Updating WordPress isn't a technical nicety — it's one of the most underrated SEO levers. Here's how neglected maintenance quietly costs you speed, security and rankings, and what to do about it.

WordPress powers more than 40% of the world's websites, which makes it the favourite target for bots and automated attackers. But the real problem with skipping maintenance isn't just "getting hacked": it's that Google quietly, gradually penalises sites that fall behind. An unmaintained WordPress site doesn't stop working overnight — it degrades, and your rankings degrade with it.

The link between maintenance and SEO is more direct than it seems. Plugins that pile up unreviewed add weight and database queries that slow down every page load, and that's exactly what Google measures — Core Web Vitals — to decide how much it rewards or punishes you. An abandoned plugin that stops getting support can break an entire section of your site or generate hundreds of 404 error pages that Google crawls instead of your good content, burning your crawl budget on junk.

Then there's the more visible risk: a WordPress site with an outdated core, PHP version or plugins is the number one entry point for malware. And when Google detects injected content or your site lands on its Safe Browsing blacklist, it doesn't just tell you — it shows every visitor a "not secure" warning before letting them in. That single warning can tank your click-through rate and brand trust overnight, even if you fix the site within a day.

What makes this insidious is that the loss isn't obvious the way a server outage is. It's a drip: a conflicting plugin adds a second of load time here, an outdated theme breaks the mobile experience there, the database fills up with revisions and spam comments nobody clears out. By the time you actually check your organic traffic and see it's dropped, you've been losing ground for months — and rebuilding Google's trust always takes longer than maintaining it would have.

Properly maintaining a website isn't turning on auto-updates and forgetting about it. It's testing changes before they hit production, backing up before every update, watching for downtime and malware continuously, cleaning the database regularly, checking for broken links, and keeping PHP and SSL certificates current. Sustained over time, that's what separates a site that keeps climbing on Google from one that stalls.

That's exactly what we do with Página Viva, our website maintenance plan: we handle updates, backups, security and speed — even if another agency built your WordPress site — so your rankings don't depend on someone remembering to click "update".
